The Revitalization of Japan: Contributing to the World through OTEC -- Xenesys Looks to Expand --
[Brief translation]
One company is trying to do something about the imbalances in the world's supply and demand for energy, water shortages, and environmental problems. Kiminao Satomi is president of the venture firm Xenesys. Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) is the generation of electricity by turbines that are turned by vaporized seawater, using the difference in temperature of seawater at the ocean's surface and seawater deep below the surface. Because the natural energy of the ocean is used, there is no depletion of fossil fuels, and few emissions such as carbon dioxide. The potential for this system is enormous. Even with such great latent potential, Xenesys is the only company in the entire world that has the actual OTEC technologies and is engaged in trying to commercialize this system. We spoke to President Satomi about his company's unique, inspiring management policy.
