Ocean thermal energy conversion has attracted the interest of many countries for its ability to generate electricity using the temperature differential of seawater at different depths. The system produces almost no carbon dioxide, and instead produces fresh water. The United Nations has begun looking into adopting OTEC widely as an effective means of resolving the most severe environmental issues of the 21st century--global warming and water shortages.
