Effective use of the sea near Okinotorishima Island is a key to secure the EEZ around the Island
[Brief translation]
In addition to the natural formation of coral reefs, private-sector researchers emphasize the inspection of more specific ways to utilize the island, such as the introduction of an "ocean thermal energy conversion" system and the construction of a lighthouse to help the fishing boats find their way in the adjacent sea. Staff members at Saga University, who have been researching the ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) system, also participated in the research. The OTEC system is attracting attention as a power generation technology utilizing natural energy.
