Tokyo Governor Ishihara visits Okinotorishima Island
[Brief translation]
It was the first time for the incumbent governor to visit Okinotorishima Island. On May 20, Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara visited Okinotorishima Island (under the jurisdiction of Ogasawara Village, Tokyo) with the purpose of insisting to China that the vicinity of the islet is Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). In order to back up the insistence, Ishihara studied ways of effective utilization of the islet. After the visit, Ishihara stated that Okinotorishima Island would have a great possibility of helping develop fisheries industry, and he also intended to construct a power plant, which utilizes the temperature differential in seawater, inside the atoll as part of economic activities.
