Tokyo Governor lands in Okinotorishima Island for the first time
[Brief translation]
Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara visited Japan’s southernmost island Okinotorishima Island, where is a bone of strife between Japan and China over the jurisdiction of Tokyo since China identified the islet as a pile of rocks last year. The intention of the governor’s visit was to make Japan’s territorial rights more solid. The governor flied the Japanese flag to appeal the sovereignty over the island while stating he had no intention to provoke China. On January, he proposed Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi a plan to construct ocean thermal energy conversion generation facilities that use temperature differential in cold and warm seawater to generate electricity.
