Strategic meaning of Okinotorishima by Shintaro Ishihara
[Brief translation]
Sea areas surrounding that islet (Okinotorishima Island) can be rich fish grounds. If we construct power generation facilities in the islet based on the application of technology that exploits temperature differential in surface and deep seawater to evaporate and condense ammonia-mixed fluids and generates electricity through heat emitted during evaporation, the pumped nutrient-rich deep seawater will attract fish. Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has already budged for the project. Japanese academician obtained an international patent for the technology. This would be the first effort in the world to work on deepwater development for fisheries. The government has full responsibility for the development including power generation and maintenance in the islet. In the last conference with the prime minister, he showed great interest in potentialities for the development using Japan’s state-of-the-art technology. Instead of staking money on the construction of highways people have hardly used, investing in the project would much more contribute to securing the security of the nation.
