[Brief translation]
Initiatives for the development of Okinotorishima Island have become clear. Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) has decided to spend more than 60 billion yen over six years for securing the island’s security and implementing the effective usage of ocean resources. In cooperation with Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, MLIT earmarks 29.5 billion yen for the construction of electricity and water supply facilities in the islet. Power supply, the basis of economic activities, is covered by ocean thermal energy conversion generation, and the facilities for deep seawater pumping will be equipped in order to produce drinking water and to enrich fisheries.
