Effective outcomes are obtained by joint project for saving-energy using waste heat, which is implemented between Sodegaura Oil Refinery of Fuji Oil Co., Ltd. and Chiba Works of Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd.. In this joint project, various waste heat generated from industrial process, are utilized for boilers and for the new power generation system using ammonia as a working fluid.
Fuji Oil Co., Ltd. is operating 4,000 kW capacity power generation system using ammonia by waste heat of the process gas of 120°C from a distillation column. This power generation system is driven by small temperature difference and the generated power is used for the house power consumption. The electricity is generated by using 3MPa steam from 97% concentration ammonia water, and the efficiency is 7.6 %. The condensed ammonia is recovered and recirculated. Loss of this process is extremely small and there is no smell at all. Amount of power generation varies with heat source variation as the heat comes from 4 heavy residue cracking units in semi-batch, but the system has been generating the power stably. The power generation is maximum in winter and reduced by 3,000 kW in summer. The reduction is 5,800 kl equivalent in crude oil. This is more than 5,600 kl that was expected in its first year.
The total energy reduction of the project achieves more than expected in its first year, which is equivalent to the reduction of 17,000 kl in crude oil. NEDO is to launch similar projects in Kita-Kyusyu, Kashima, Kawasaki industrial complexes such as supplying steam from thermal power generation to chemical facilities.
